A newly formed group is trying to save St John's Church, Kates Hill in Dudley. You will remember this church was a casualty of the "Dudley Earthquake" a few years ago and has not been used since due to structural damage. The group believe it should be saved for future generations. They believe it is possible and feasible to reopen the church and that the £2 million repair figure quoted in the press is vastly over inflated. There is much support for the group's cause and there is a page dedicated to the group on our website - click here => St John's updated 4/5/08)

MAY 2008 MEETING OF CANAL GROUP

The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Society (SWCS) is hosting a presentation by British Waterways officials Alexandra Ball and Elizabeth Turner on the subjects of Heritage Issues at Stourport and the Heritage Recording Project. Chairman of Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Society Graham Fisher MBE said; ‘Alexandra will be guiding us through the wonderful renovation work that has helped revitalise Stourport whilst Elizabeth will be giving details of exciting proposals for the recording and interpretation of the heritage aspects along the entire canal. This joint presentation will showcase the work that is being undertaken to preserve our unique waterways legacy and also offer enthusiasts the opportunity to actively participate in its ongoing promotion.’

The meeting will be held at the Bradmore Community Centre, Birches Barn Road, Wolverhampton on Monday 12th May 2008 commencing 7.30pm. It is open to the public and admission is free. Light refreshments are available. The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal (SWC) runs through 46 miles and 43 locks between Great Haywood on the Trent & Mersey Canal and Stourport on the River Severn. It was engineered by James Brindley and opened throughout in 1772, offering a direct route from the potteries and beyond to the Severn and hence the great ports. It is one of the oldest established and most esteemed canal societies in the country, serving to safeguard, promote and develop theinterests of the SWC for the benefit of all.

Society activities include regular boat gatherings, clean ups and liaison with outside organisations crucial amongst which is British Waterways, the official custodians of many of Britain’s rivers and canals. A monthly meeting at Bradmore (Wolverhampton) is open to all and features regular guest speakers on a wide variety of topics.www.swcs.org.uk is the official website of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Society. It is compiled by Committee with contributions from members and uploaded by the Society’s in-house computer specialist, again on avoluntary basis. It has recently undergone substantial modification with the inclusion of a dedicated Education & Resources facility.

The Upper Severn Hydro & Navigation Company Ltd (Severn Hydro) is pleased to announce that it will be attending the prestigious Saul Festival to be held over the weekend of 5th-6th July 2008 at Saul Junction on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. (off Jn. 13, M5)

Since its inception in 2006 Severn Hydro has quickly established its credentials as the premier independent Organisation spearheading regeneration of the Upper Severn. The Company aims to introduce variable-height weirs that will house turbines generating ‘green’ CO2-free electricity. The inclusion of locks will enable the reinstatement of the ancient right of navigation whilst the variability of the weirs will offer a considerable enhancement to flood alleviation in an area prone to the vagaries of weather.

USH&NCo spokesman Graham Fisher MBE said: ‘The Saul Festival offers a wonderful showcase for Severn Hydro to draw its exciting proposals to the attention of a wide audience. We welcome all those interested in constructively utilising the potential of the Severn to visit us at Saul and learn more of our vision to generate ‘green’ CO2-free energy for the benefit of all’. Company MD Jeremy Coles added: ‘The event will also offer the opportunity for feedback on our venture and to extend upon our ever-growing base of support for what we believe is one of the most exciting developments on Britain’s longest river in over a century’.

The Saul Festival is organised by Cotswold Canals Trust in support of its efforts to restore the waterway link between the G&S Canal (and hence the Severn) and the Thames. It has developed into one of the major waterways festivals in the UK. For more details view www.junctionevents.org.uk
